Congratulations, you have received a wildflower seed packet from the Harrison Kesling for Morrisville campaign! Planting wildflowers is a great way for us to support local pollinator habitats and we encourage you to plant these seeds to help our pollinating neighbors. The seed packet contains a wide variety of native wildflowers as well as some beneficial non-natives. The list of all the wildflowers can be found in the table below. For tips on how to plant, please visit this link.
In 2021, the Town of Morrisville took the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge to help save the monarch butterfly, an iconic species whose eastern populations have declined by 90 percent. Through the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, the Town of Morrisville has committed to:
Creating habitats for the monarch butterfly and other pollinators.
Educating people about how they can make a difference at home and in their community.
With your help we can fulfill that commitment and create a more beautiful Morrisville that supports important ecosystems! Please consider donating to our campaign so we can purchase more seed packets. With just $5 we can purchase 16 packets which would cover 80 square feet, enough to feed thousands of butterflies and bees.
The Town of Morrisville also has an apiary set up at Fire Station #3. The bees housed there positively impact 18,000 acres within our community, pollinating parts of Morrisville and the Research Triangle Park, all within a 3 mile radius of the apiary. Their peak season is from spring to late summer. The importance of pollinators is listed below.
They teach us important lessons in stewardship, sustainability, and teamwork.
Every third bite of food you eat is thanks to a pollinator!
Honeybees and native bees all over the world are dying at alarming rates due to a number of factors, like the increase of pesticides and parasites, decrease in habitat, and lack of proper nutrition.
Honeybees are the worlds number one pollinator and are responsible for pollinating 70 of the world’s top 100 food crops.
A honeybee has over 1,200 pollination events in a single day! They travel within a 3-mile radius of their hive.
The map below shows that 3-mile radius.
